{"id":5566,"date":"2023-09-11T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T10:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/?p=5566"},"modified":"2023-09-05T16:38:34","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T14:38:34","slug":"a-plunge-into-needlestick-injuries-in-belgium-and-the-netherlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/news-innovation\/a-plunge-into-needlestick-injuries-in-belgium-and-the-netherlands\/","title":{"rendered":"A plunge into needlestick injuries in Belgium and the Netherlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, an estimated 1.2 million needlestick injuries (NSIs) occurred in Europe before the Covid pandemic.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>With a 22% increase from 2020 to 2021, NSIs are on the rise in our region.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Focus on needlestick injuries in Belgium<\/h2>\n<p>With around 200 members, beMedTech is a federation of medical device manufacturers and distributors in Belgium.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A survey of healthcare workers (HCWs) in Belgium was conducted on behalf of beMedTech between November 2019 and February 2020.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>An estimated 55% of Belgian nurses and medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) reported experiencing an NSI or sharps injury at least once during their careers.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>According to Marnix Denys, the Managing Director of beMedTech, \u201cNurses are under more pressure than ever.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The most common location where Belgian nurses experienced an NSI was in the patient\u2019s room (35%).<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>beMedTech estimates that 40\u201375% of NSIs and sharps injuries are not reported.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>According to the above survey, the top three reasons given for not reporting include:<sup>4<\/sup><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Presumption of noninfectious patient<\/li>\n<li>Heavy workload<\/li>\n<li>Fear of reporting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>More on this topic:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/news-innovation\/feeling-down-after-a-needlestick-injury-youre-not-alone\/\">Feeling down after a needlestick injury? You\u2019re not alone<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Use of safety devices in Belgium and the Netherlands<\/h2>\n<p>The use of safety devices varies greatly between these two countries.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, beMedTech asked its members about the use of safety devices in these two countries.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Only 15% of injections involved safety needles in Belgium, compared with 45.5% in the Netherlands.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to blood collection, only 11% of needles in Belgium are safety needles, compared with 86 percent in the Netherlands.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Moving on to intravenous (IV) catheters, a little over half (55%) are safety catheters in Belgium, while 87% of them are in the Netherlands.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The lack of safety devices is alarming considering the potential consequences of an NSI.<\/p>\n<p>The results of this HCW survey are summarised in a position paper entitled \u201cPreventing needlestick and sharps injuries in the healthcare sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper was released in February 2022 by beMedTech\u2019s Safety Working Group (of which BD is a member*).<\/p>\n<p>After taking stock of the NSI and sharps injury situation in both countries, the position paper lays out recommendations for Belgian and Dutch healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Five recommendations to ensure sharps safety in Belgium and the Netherlands<sup>2<\/sup><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Improve reporting and monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Increase use of safety devices<\/li>\n<li>Allocate more safety budget to public healthcare facilities<\/li>\n<li>Provide training and awareness on NSIs and sharps injuries to HCWs<\/li>\n<li>Create a legally binding framework that is reinforced<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>More on this topic: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/news-innovation\/protecting-healthcare-workers-from-needlestick-injuries-the-effect-of-legislation\/\">Protecting healthcare workers from needlestick injuries \u2013 The effect of legislation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA safe work environment is more important than ever, both for [nurses\u2019] health and well-being and that of their patients.
