When most are considered largely preventable, you may be able to reduce your spending by implementing safer sharps practices.<sup>1,2<\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Average cost of a needlestick injury<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>According to a study held in a German university hospital, healthcare and general economic costs per needlestick injury varied from \u20ac500 to \u20ac1,600 in 2016.<sup>3 <\/sup>The cost of a needlestick injury encompasses a range of factors including:<sup>4,5<\/sup><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legal consequences (litigation and compensation claims)<\/li>\n<li>Counselling for injured workers<\/li>\n<li>Staff absences and replacements<\/li>\n<li>Post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent or manage bloodborne virus transmission<\/li>\n<li>Testing for infection in the injured worker and, if known, the patient on whom the needle\/sharp had been used<\/li>\n<li>Short- and long-term treatment of chronic bloodborne viral infections that are transmitted to injured workers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the NHS alone, 1,213 successful incident claims for needlestick injuries between 2012 \u2013 2017 cost the organisation \u20a44,077,441 (roughly \u20ac\u200e4,602,261), equivalent to the annual salaries of 125 band 5 nurses.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the burden of needlestick injuries: <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/news-innovation\/feeling-down-after-a-needlestick-injury-youre-not-alone\/\"><strong>Feeling down after a needlestick injury?
