Difficult intravenous access (DIVA) may cause delays in patient management as well as increases in hospitalisation costs<sup>1<\/sup>. It was tested at the Tor Vergata General Hospital in Rome, Italy in 280 patients<sup>8<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The instrument assesses variables related to peripheral vein quality and identifies factors that could compromise vessel health<sup>3<\/sup>. It is made up of 15 items<sup>8<\/sup>. It includes 10 patient characteristics and 5 associated with the IV\/therapeutic factors of each patient<sup>8<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The nurses first evaluate vessel quality through visual inspection and ultrasound<sup>3<\/sup>. After this initial patient venous condition assessment, the appropriate VAD is selected based on the type of therapy to be administered<sup>3<\/sup>. According to Fiorini et al., nurses are the appropriate healthcare professional (HCP) to help ensure vessel preservation and assess the patients\u2019 venous condition at an early stage<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>More on this topic: <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/events-training\/what-is-new-uk-vessel-health-and-preservation\/\">What\u2019s new in U.K. Vessel Health and Preservation 2020?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They found that the VHP scale had acceptable levels of sensitivity (95%) and specificity (72%)<sup>8<\/sup>.
