Mussa explained that oftentimes in the ED, the choice of vascular access device isn\u2019t always aligned with clinical recommendations due to the need for rapid decision-making.<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unlike peripherally-inserted central catheters (PICCs), midline catheters terminate in the peripheral and not the central vein.<\/span><sup><span catheters are designed to administer medication; however, they have been known to aid in blood draw for patients with difficult venous access (DVA) to avoid the need for multiple literature, peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are known as the most common invasive hospital procedure performed worldwide and have an unacceptably high overall failure rate of 35-50%.<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5<\/span><\/sup><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From his Cuneo Hospital ED study, Prof Mussa presented the rate of complications in patients after 1 day, 3 days and 7 days with central venous catheters.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> He explained that after 3 days, only 51.9% of patients reported no complications, and after 7 days, that number dropped to 14.16%.<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><\/sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prof Mussa cited various studies in support of midline catheters and their lower risk of adverse events and complications when compared to PICC lines.<\/span><span catheters in hospitalized patients, only 3.5 mechanical complications and 1.1 events of thrombosis\/phlebitis were recorded per 1000 catheter days, with an average dwell time of 27 ED, how do we combat this to ensure effective vascular access for emergency patients?<\/span><span Midline Catheter, which was designed to be easy to place with its \u201cno-touch\u201d technology.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> He explained that it is especially user-friendly for ED nurses who are untrained in placing PICC lines because its insertion is similar to that of a cannula (PIVC).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> As well, thanks to its closed structure, it is \u201cimpossible to contaminate.\u201d<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><\/sup><span Catheter at the Citta Della Salute Hospital in Turin, Italy, where nurses for 300 emergency medical and surgical patients were observed in their abilities to place the midline catheter.<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nurses were given device care bundles for catheter placement and management as well as basic training on implant management.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> However, he insisted that they were not specially trained vascular access nurses, but general ED nurses.<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><\/sup><span catheters were successfully placed, with only 23 reported complications, of which 12 led to removal.<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><\/sup><span
