Intravenous (IV) complications are costly to both the patient and the health system as a whole<sup>2<\/sup>. The U.K. Vessel Health and Preservation (VHP) framework was created to help improve vascular access management in the United Kingdom<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Carole Hallam, Independent Nurse Consultant, presented an update to the U.K. VHP framework at the BD Multidisciplinary Advanced Course on Vascular Access (MACOVA) 2022 in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More on this topic: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/events-training\/how-to-improve-the-reliability-of-healthcare-from-sir-david-dalton\/\">How to improve the reliability of healthcare, from Sir David Dalton<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What is the U.K. Vessel Health and Preservation framework?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The U.K. VHP framework was originally developed by the VHP Group in 2016<sup>1<\/sup>. A list of medicines that could be administered via central venous catheter (CVC) was removed from the 2020 version because it was considered to be falsely reassuring as other factors need to be taken in to account<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 version no longer specifies pH and osmolarity levels because all intravenous medicines could potentially harm vessel health<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cRight line decision tool\u201d now covers three pathways<sup>4<\/sup>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Emergency<\/li>\n<li>Known difficult intravenous access (DIVA)<\/li>\n<li>Non-emergency<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This section was updated with the evidence-based use of extended-length cannula placed with ultrasound guidance into deeper veins<sup>3,5<\/sup>. The duration time for devices was revised with evidence from the MAGIC study<sup>6<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The updated \u201cSuitability of IV fluids\/medications for peripheral vein administration\u201d section now considers suitable vein definition (i.e., visible and compressible, 3 mm or larger)<sup>3,7<\/sup>. It also recommends that patients with known DIVA be referred to an IV specialist and placed on an individualised pathway<sup>3,7<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More on this topic: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.bd.com\/iv-news\/events-training\/make-the-case-for-a-vascular-access-team-by-convincing-with-facts-2\/\">Make the case for a vascular access team by convincing with facts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cDaily evaluation\u201d section was updated to encourage timely removal of the device as well as pay close attention to potential complications<sup>3<\/sup>.
