SPOTLIGHT ON MACOVA 2025: Together we all play a part in preventing vascular access complications

MACOVA – Multidisciplinary Advanced Course on Vascular Access was kicked off on Wednesday, 11 June, in Amsterdam. The event brought together 180 healthcare professionals from 28 countries across 3 continents, all united by a shared goal: to exchange knowledge and experiences in the field of Vascular Access Management (VAM).

The three-day congress was co-chaired by Andrew Barton, Nurse Consultant in IV Therapy and Vascular Access at Frimley Health NHS Trust, UK, and Dr. Fulvio Pinelli, Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Careggi University Hospital, Florence. Both chairs contributed their extensive expertise in VAM and are actively involved in leading European Vascular Access Societies, including GaVeCeLT, WoCoVa, and NIVAS.

The agenda was fully focused on product agnostic scientific exchange, driving the adoption of best practice VAM across EMEA. A broad spectrum of topics building from choosing the most appropriate device for the patient, diving deeper into specific therapy areas and expanding into understanding how to prevent and manage complications. Care beyond the hospital, an expanding area of interest for BD and the EMEA healthcare systems, was addressed with a presentation of a UK virtual hospital set up and the Italian Oncology patient/carer self-care model HVAS from Italy.

In addition to the plenary sessions practical workshops provided an opportunity for hands on experience with ultrasound skills, Sherlock 3CG tip location technology while interactive seminars including driving change for VAM, appropriate device choice and Healthcare worker safety.

Macova 2025

MACOVA 2025 added to the rich VAM history from its inception in 2008. The first MACOVA had 10 HCPs, including Dr Herve Rosay, who has gone on to be instrumental in driving nurse delegation in France and shared his experience with at MACOVA 2025. Who knows what the delegates will go on to achieve and how they will shape practice in their countries with BD at their side.

One of the key objectives of MACOVA is to drive VAM practice change in partnership with BD. To facilitate this delegates were encouraged to register with the BD VAMbassadors Programme. BD VAMbassadors are a collective dedicated to championing the best VAM practices, connecting people with a shared vision to drive change.

But VAMbassador is not only about the 180 attendees of Macova, we all have a role to play and you could join that community and play your part in preventing vascular access complication.
